You’ll use three portals: Volunteer Hub to register, TaxSlayer to practise, and Link & Learn to take your test.

Step 2

Learn with us

Join our training, either in-person or online, to strengthen your skills, boost confidence, and prepare for volunteering.

Step 3

Get certified

Get IRS certified with our full support. Once you’re certified, you’re ready to start making a difference in someone’s life.

Volunteer training resources

All volunteers need to complete Volunteer Standards of Conduct and an Intake, Interview & Quality Review Certifications, with the option to complete the Basic Tax Preparer Training and Quality Reviewer Training.

This guide includes volunteer expectations, key info, training steps, and required resources.

  • 2024–2025 Mini Manual – Provided at in-person training and sites. Review and use throughout tax season.
  • Pub 4012 – IRS Volunteer Resource Guide for preparing returns in TaxSlayer.

Certification Tests

Volunteers must score 80%+ on required tests (two attempts allowed; 
retest has new questions). Use Pub 6744 for test questions.
